Zuma for Death Penalty!
Now before you jump down my throat and shout at me for wishing death on someone, I am not. In fact, right now I am praising Zuma. Yes I said I am praising him!
I heard on the radio this morning that Zuma is opening discussions for the death penalty. Now it is important to note that he did not state that he was for or against it, he just stated that why not have a debate about something that has been decided on in the past and most importantly why not in a country that follows ’strict’ democratic principles.
I have always thought that Zuma would always be a good president even though I might see him as a buffoon.
The topic of the death penalty should bring up very interesting and heated debates - I have always love the topic.
What do you think of it, do you think it is a viable fix for crime or do you think that it could potentially ruin lives of innocent people with our current Judicial system in shambles?

Yodel!!
Nice to see you’re doing the Blogging thing =]
I have to admit … Zuma’s idea of the death penalty…NICE, however, I don’t think that a man with that kinda ‘machine gun’ vision having the ability to kill…legally.

Just out of interest, what are your opinions on the death penalty?
March 5th, 2008 at 12:48 pm
Personally, i’m Pro.
The only reason being - there are 1000s of fuckers that will no longer rape/steal/murder if they realise that there’s an actual consiquense!
I understand that a couple people may be killed where they shouldn’t be - but it’ll be far less than the deaths as a result of violent crime.

True and I believe that it could have a positive effect, but what would happen if your best friend, mom, dad, sister, brother, girlfriend, boyfriend, wife, husband, son or daughter were to get incorrectly given the death penalty either by set up, by decisions or just by an idiot behind a desk marking the wrong paper?

The same thing as if some criminal decided their cell phone was worth their life and the possibility of getting caught, incarserated for 5 years and then living the good life thereafter.
I have had this discussion before. There is no changing my mind
I’m pro the crime-rates of 30 years ago..

Death penalty is necessary…it will bring the crime rate lower - but with this current SA leagal syatem and the government officials…eish…that’s another story…

I think the death penalty even in a sound judicial system goes against any moral principle - you doing da same as the criminals.
I think arabic way of doing things much better. Take the guys hands if he steals, castrate him if he rapes,
when it comes to murder they just hand someone, but i think jus put them far away from society - look at Aussie - they all come from criminal decent & they are okay now
Heya seagyan - I like that you are so objective

@ Mayvelous - what can i say, i got a good up bringing
I agree with that, my biggest idea of the “Death Sentence” is not to kill people but the principle of learning from your mistakes. So even if people learn by loosing a hand or something more then it would deter people from doing pity stuff.
Not only will it stop them but it would put them in the right place, because if they do try rob my house, they will be more scared of what will happen to them by law than what I would do to them.

I like your thinking in terms of putting yourself or close family member in the “hangees” position, Seag, but realistically, unless there is some whacked vendetta/ setup against you, you should be pretty safe from the rope.
Look at Botswana, they have the death penalty and trust me you don’t want to even end up in their prisons - they have minimal crime and that that there is, is really petty stuff.
Something else to consider - The death sentence should only apply in the instance of clear cut evidence - eye witnesses not circumstantial stuff. And only in cases of murder or violent sexual assault or armed robbery.
Maybe a jury-like system might be a better bet than a judge who doesn’t have the highest degree of objectivity - in apartheid days one can imagine a lot of black people got to air dance for nothing.
These days the shoe is on the other foot.

I like all your hidden metaphors
its an interesting topic to me and will be interesting to see if someone will ever bring back a death penalty.

I tend to sit on the line with regards to death penalty.
Yes, in my personal opinion I do think that it is required in this country, as I feel it will help deter people from violent crime. Yet for it to be effective we would need to sort out the police force 1st.
I have always liked the idea of Muslim law (except for the prejudice that it places onto women), the eye for an eye principal is in my opinion a great deterrence.
Yet this once again falls onto our police system as it currently is corrupt, which would in my opinion lead to unjust law system and maybe even give the police a greater sense of “Godly Power”
