4 Fuel and Money Saving Tips

With the fuel price going up in a week it is a good time to let you in on a few secrets to save those few drops of petrol/diesel this year. We create applications for a fuel transport company which has given me an insight to the tips and tricks of the trade.

Coincidently at the same time a member on the E30 Club Forum brought up a few tips.

  1. Fill up early
    No this does not mean you must beat the rush. Petroleum is effected by temperature and .5 of a degree could change the amount of fuel drastically. The cooler the fuel the denser it is thus making sure you get every drop you are paying for (the warmer it is the more likely you are not getting the full litre the meter is telling you).Remember that the tanks are underground, so filling up in the morning after a long cool night will be best.
  2. Slow and easy
    If it is possible, ask the attendant to put the petrol in as slow as possible. You might be in a rush, but the vapors are also in a rush to leave you tank and go back straight into the vapor return on the tank.
  3. Do not leave it until the last minute
    Petrol evaporates very easily, so if you leave your tank until it is empty you will have a tank full of vapor which will disappear as soon as that fuel cap is opened.
  4. Drive consistently
    It does not matter how fast you drive, if you can keep you foot steady (not flat) you will save that valuable liter. The worst thing you can do is drive slow and put your foot flat to over take a vehicle (Ever wondered how driving on the open road uses less fuel than driving in town?)

Tip: Do not put petrol in whilst a tanker is there putting fuel in. The petrol is being pumped in the tank which “stirs” the tank and brings up all the dirt from the bottom of the tank. Now you do not want that in you motor!

Hope these help you ease that budget for 2008!

if ($fuel > R8.00) {echo run for the hills}

As from next Tuesday, I will be running, very fast!

Every few months we get a fuel price change, sometime down but mostly up. It was announced today that fuel will be going up at least 62c next Tuesday at Midnight. So if you can walk fast/ride, I suggest you start getting back into it because this will tighten up peoples budgets which currently are already like a corset on a 16 century woman.

For the retail market I assume spending will be down because both costs will go up and less money will be spent.

Time to get out those thinking cap, I have always thought mielies could run a car??
