WordPress going Social

The guys at Automattic have been working on a plugin for WordPress Mu; a derivative of WordPress that allows you to have multiple blogs controlled and maintained from one central point. This plugin has been dubbed BuddyPress.

From the name you can easily guess what it will do and what it will do is going to change the social arena for good. Many of the features that are being worked on are features that you will find on any of the major Social Networking site such as Facebook or MySpace and so on but obviously as the creator of WordPress, Matthew Mullenweg, seeming tries to do with every bit of code he is involved in is try and make it 100 times better.

Does ‘Blackle’ save energy?

Have you heard of Blackle.com? If you have then you would know about the whole power saving because the screen is black scheme. Well it is partly true and partly untrue.

If you were old fashioned or just could not afford an LCD screen then yes, you will save about 5% - 20% of the power your computer is currently drawing. However, if you are using an LCD monitor or have a laptop, you are probably not saving anything. This is because a LCD screen still uses electricity to create the black colours on the screen. So if you have a CRT monitor you can save electricity by using Blackle but in all fairness you would save more energy using an LCD monitor than using a CRT monitor with Blackle as your default search engine.

Tired of Facebook Spam?

Those of you who use Facebook would have experienced the “spam” effect of the applications! Facebook have finally started brining in solutions to protect the millions of active users they have. A few weeks ago they launched the ‘Clear All’ feature which allows you to clear all pending requests, and now you have the ability to block an application sending you any invited in the future!

Block Facebook Apps!

It is about time! Don’t get me wrong, I still use the applications on Facebook, I am just tired of the “What underwear do you wear” and “Sell your friend” application invites. This news also comes upon Facebook’s release of new regulations that will govern how applications are run on Facebook!

Sun’s purchase of MySQL AB is a breathe of fresh air

Sun announced yesterday that it has purchased MySQL AB, yes that includes MySQL for a mere 1 billion dollars.

Now your first thought would be “oh now there goes a free open source product”, well you are wrong! If Sun have anything to do with it, it will definitely remain open source and if they stick to what they say MySQL will now have enterprise-grade support behind it, something MySQL has lacked and has scared away many of the big corporate “rely on microsoft products” companies.

On another point, the article where I originally got my information from is running WordPress MU, well it looks like it at least. It is good that big companies are running blogs like this, it allows for the individuals to express themselves with in big companies which generally do not allow you to do so.

WordPress and loving it!

I am well on the way in the design of my very first WordPress theme which is proving to be one of the most enthraling projects I have ever undertaken.

I have loved every bit of it especially because of the internal design of WordPress. I have designed many templates before including some on Joomla! which have not even given me half the enjoyment that designing a WordPress theme has.
