Becoming a Supple Leopard...
When you first see the title of this post you must immediately think "What on earth?!" but just imagine how amazing it would be to be as supple as a leopard yet never have to really spend hours stretching every day. This is the basis to what Kelly Starrett writes in his book, Becoming a Supple Leopard: The Ultimate Guide to Resolving Pain, Preventing Injury, and Optimizing Athletic Performance.
Just like a leopard, the human body is designed and was created to work in a perfect manner. Our bodies have the ability to run a ten second 100m spring; they have the ability to pass a rugby ball across an entire field; they have the ability to lift 200 KG in a dead lift. So what has happened?
Without being to dramatic, life happened. We sit behind a desk all day working behind a computer, we rush to gym to complete a workout as quickly as we can (with no care for good form) and we eat the most convenient food we can find. I'm probably the worst when it comes to all that.
However, I've realised that it is not sustainable and, if I don't make a change, my body will be giving up before my heart and soul wants to.
This is where Becoming a Supple Leopard comes into the picture.
It's quite an interesting read so far (it's 900+ pages so give me a break please) and it has really made me realise how important every day events - life as I called it - are actually the reason we want our bodies to be in tip top shape.
The book is a great read and has caught my attention for the next little while I transform my body from one that wastes energy and power to a body that defies the odds... or at the very least just stops getting irritating injuries.
