Should your blogs primary goal to be to make money?

Over the years a few people have made queries about how much money they can make from blogging. I used to love answering these questions because I thought I knew how.

Now that I’ve grown up a little and my values have changed I don’t think blogging should be about making money at all. I think it should be about adding value to peoples lives. The by-product of that could be potentially making money off quality content that is adding value to people who in turn share it.

What are your thoughts? I don’t want to be to shortsighted with this but I do think it’s an important mindset.

  1. I think blogging has a place for both personal and business content distribution.

The great thing about blogging is that it’s unfiltered. No algorithm is controlling who gets to read your content. You can build up an audience and they can subscribe directly to your feed via RSS.

From a personal perspective, writing can be a great creative outlet and a means of forging connections with people.

From a business perspective, writing about the topics your work with on a daily basis can be a great way to demonstrate competence. It’s also handy to build up a central resource of answers to questions people ask you regularly, this way when people ask you a question you can refer them to a link with the answer.

It’s pretty cool to be able to go back and review what you have written in the past and see how your writing style has changed.

    1. Hi Nathan,

Thanks for the comment. I totally agree with what you’re saying. I also agree with the point of going back and seeing how much of your style has changed over the years.

For me, at this point, in hoping to build up an audience that I have similar interests to and that I can hopefully chat to and maybe even influence – it’s much more fulfilling!
